Pretoria Golf Club – formally known as “Pretoria West” – is not only the oldest golf club in Pretoria, but it was the first club to allow female players to join. Officially the club was born on Tuesday 2nd May 1894 when the first official meeting was held. A nine hole course was established within a month. The official opening took place on the 9th of June 1894.

The Killarney Country Club golf course is a narrow park-style course with a premium on driving accuracy. It is a Robert Trent-Jones design and is a challenging and well-manicured par 70 layout of 6145m for men and a par 72 for the ladies playing at 5294m. The greens are generous in size which gives you a good chance of scoring well when playing from the fairways. However, miss a fairway and you can almost be sure of having to play a recovery shot from amongst the trees.

This golf course was laid out by Captain Lumsden (Scottish international) for Stephen Dyer on his farm named Virginia farm. In 1937 the course opened for play as an 11 hole course. Two years later the last seven holes were completed and brought into play. In the early years the golf club was known as Virginia Park golf club with its current name, South Downs country club, being adopted in the 1950s.

Over the next decade much was achieved at Glenvista Country Club. Most of our current facilities including the present clubhouse, the tennis pavilion & a much-needed car park were constructed. By 1993 all 18 bent grass greens were re-laid to U.S. PGA standards. Glenvista Country Club had a golf course to be truly proud of. Water reticulation systems were subsequently added, making scorched, winter fairways a thing of the past. In 2001, the practice putting green was re-built to the stringent standards set by our course greens.

ERPM Golf Club came into being in 1903 when 3 holes were built around the first school in Boksburg, a wood and iron structure that is still standing today. The building was also used as the first clubhouse and is situated on the right hand side of the first fairway.<br /> In 1906, 18 holes were completed. The President at the time was Colonel Sir George Farrar DSO, who was instrumental in floating East Rand Property Mines Limited on 8th May 1893. The captain of the club was D McKay. The first recorded Club Champion was F N Critlends in 1913.

Historically named Nazareth, the town of Middelburg, was established in 1864 by the local farmers and a midway stop to the ox-wagon trail from Pretoria to Lydenburg. The original golf course was built after the Anglo Boer War in 1903 by the Imperial British Troops, whose cantonments were where the present clubhouse and driving range is situated. Three separate clubs, Golf, Bowling, and Social Clubs originally existed on the site where the Mascot Theatre and Mica stores are located. The arrival of Columbus Stainless in 1962, resulted in an influx of people in Middelburg which caused all available vacant areas to be sold, and it became necessary for the Town Council to lay out additional suburbs. The Previous location of the Golf, Bowls, and Social Clubs were rezoned and resulted in them having to relocate.
